Leaves from the Theatre of War

The series offers an extensive range of over 250 drawings depicting scenes that convey the nightmarish atmosphere of the realities of war whose  theme occupies an important and central role of Kanso's artistic activities. The works in the Leave from the Theatre of War series express their independent realm of imageries and assert themselves by capturing the feelings of their themes through the coherence of the subject matter and the vehemence of the techniques.

The impetuousness of the pen strokes and the flow of ink are applied with bold and brutal effect to communicate the essence of the experience and immediacy of the realities of war with sharply satiric tones that underscore the tragic-comic characters of the forces at work.

The pen and ink technique emphasizes the sharp contrast between the light and dark areas reflecting a profound resonance of the interplay between reality and illusion. The intense sequence of highly concentrated images endows the series with a palpable inner reality of the harsh brutalities of war.
